Tourism is now one of the largest industries in the world and this module intends to explore tourism from an economic prospective focusing on three main areas: First, it will explore the debates surrounding the use of tourism as a tool for national and local economic development including the arguments related to the use of tourism for the economic regeneration of peripheral areas. Second, the strategies used by national and local governments to stimulate and promote investment in tourism from both foreign and indigenous sources will be critically evaluated. Third, the impact of tourism investment on national and local economies, focusing on key areas of employment, business development and the environment will also be critically assessed. The module will draw on a range of case study examples from both the developed and developing world which will provide the essential understanding required for critical evaluation.

Learning outcomes:

  • Undertake a critical examination of the link between tourism and economic development.
  • Determine and critically assess the strategies used by governments to promote tourism investment.
  • Critically evaluate the impact of tourism investment on employment, local business development, national economics and the environment.
